Jonas Yee Shun Lau wins Caissa Spring Rapid with a perfect 6/6

Full house on 17 May: 36 rapid chess enthusiasts gathered to compete for the Caissa Spring Rapid title. Again a very young field - we're happy to see many of our students finding their way to fide rated chess!

On to the results:

Rounds 1 and 2

Usually, this is where people are still warming up and when they're finding out what their form of the day is. Kin Ho Chu was the only rated player who was still waking up and lost a full point to Caissa student Cyrus Ho Him Lau. In the second round Chi Ngo Chan (Declan) and Bryan Qirui Tang joined Kin Ho in the list of rated players not staying perfect by losing to Anson Chun Kit Ching and drawing against Chun Ho Cheung respectively.

On the first board, we had the matchup between Jonas Yee Shun Lau and Shun Wang Liu (Ernest), which might very well have been the title match in the final round. This time, it was Jonas who clinched the win and continues to build on his very good form.

Rounds 3 and 4

After three rounds Jonas, Nathaniel Sheung Him Wong and Jayden Joi Hei Au were the only players who could show a perfect report. Jayden lost against Aravind Mahadevan, while Jonas was the better player in his matchup with Nathaniel.

Rounds 5 and 6

It was becoming clear that nobody would be able to stop Jonas this day and indeed, Jonas raced to 6/6 clinching a dominant first place - this one week after his third place at Harrow Scholastic U11 and 2 weeks after his Standard League win!

Declan (4.5) had been silently making a comeback and was playing for second place against Nathaniel (4.5) but after mutual timetrouble, he couldn't convert a promising position and the game ended in a draw. This opened the door for Aravind (4.5) and Ernest (4.5) to win their games and join in shared second place.

Aravind Mahadevan had the best tiebreak, followed by Nathaniel, Ernest and Declan. Tejas Aravind (4/6) completed the top 6. Ruiyan Ying (3/6) took the best girl trophy home.
