CNY Blitz

Updated: 13 minutes ago

Blitz is fast paced chess. Not all chess players have the ability to handle their nerves in constant timetrouble while even fewer chess players are brave enough to even consider the only faster form: lightning chess. On 15 February, 27 fast chess enthusiasts gathered in our Sheung Wan center to fight out who could call themselves the CNY Caissa Blitz Champion 2026 after seven double rounds (14 games against 7 opponents).

Playing quickly also means making a lot of blunders. In no other format will you find more upsets. Also in this tournaments that was the case. As early as after the first double round, many of the higher rated players lost points. Only 8 players managed to stay perfect. Most notably rating favorite from Mainland Chen Li allowed a draw in his first game and even lost the second one against youth player Joy San Lucas Leung. Lucas would go on to play an excellent tournament, gaining 133 rating points. Also Sunny Lo missed his start and scored half a point in both of his games against Wai Hei Lau.

Yibai Ren, also from Mainland, was the player who took advantage of the situation. After defeating FM Daniel Lam with 1,5-0,5 in rounds 5 and 6, he also won against Sunny in round 7. It looked like everything was already decided, but Sunny didn't give up! With an 8th round win he put himself in striking distance, while FM Daniel Lam caught up to Yibai.

Now Sunny and Daniel had to face each other and both were in a must-win situation to keep their chances alive. They shared wins against each other, while Yibai started a six-win streak to clinch first place.

Daniel ended up taking the second place trophy home, while Sunny had to be content with a fourth place. Chen Li surged to third place after a late comeback.
